My second professional dream was to teach at university. In 2020, in the middle of the pandemic, I applied for and obtained an associate lecturer position teaching Python programming and Geographic Information Systems.
Almost a year later, as I wrote the original manuscript, I could honestly say I had enjoyed it enormously. There had been difficult moments, but I tried to follow the example I had seen in my parents: use common sense.
Teaching is not easy. You need to prepare well enough to guide the class, while remaining fair in how you assess students. On reflection, the ethical questions were often harder than the technology or the subject matter. Explaining something is one challenge; deciding how fairly to recognise someone else’s learning is another.
I remain grateful to the professor and lecturers who selected me and gave me that opportunity. At the time of writing, I hoped to return for the following academic year and face new challenges—God willing.
