This is a short journey through the computing industry and back again: the path taken by a middle-class Spaniard born in 1979. People say that remembering the past helps us avoid repeating it. I am not sure life is quite so obliging, but looking back can help us understand the choices that brought us here.
This first part is less about technology than about people: motivation, leadership and the difficulties we meet along the way. There is no neat moral attached to every experience. Each reader can draw their own conclusions. If there is a thread running through the whole story, it is resilience: when something goes wrong, get up and try again. The phoenix is a useful image, provided we remember how uncomfortable the ashes can be.
