After enough years in a field, you begin to recognise the waves in which new ideas arrive. Computing is also a market, and both suppliers and customers contribute to its messages.
Some waves reflect genuine advances. Others owe much of their force to promotion, commercial positioning or the need to stand out. Frequently, both things happen at once.
Behind a fashionable claim may be technical evidence, commercial incentives, strategic aims or social expectations. Instead of rejecting novelty or welcoming it automatically, I prefer to ask a few questions: who benefits, what problem is being solved, and what changes when the label is removed?
