Python: a practical language for thinking

Reflect on this chapter ↓

I often describe Python as a Swiss Army knife. It is useful in many settings, although that does not make it the best tool for every task.

Python is a high-level, dynamically typed, general-purpose language. It supports object-oriented programming as well as procedural and functional styles. Calling its object support merely partial, as the original draft did, would be misleading.

What I value most is the relationship between readability and experimentation. At first, the lack of familiar punctuation can feel as though something is missing. With practice, much of what seemed absent turns out not to have been necessary for expressing the idea clearly.

Python has a strong role in data analysis, artificial intelligence, automation and web development. Its usefulness is broader than any single wave of popularity. There is little value in predicting that one language must eliminate another: different ecosystems continue to serve different needs.

The important step is to write programs, read other people’s code and learn to test your assumptions. A language becomes a tool for thought when you understand both what it makes easy and what still requires care.
