If one thing never changes in Spanish education, it is teachers' excessive workload. Over the years, they have been asked to be not only educators but also psychologists, careers advisers, mediators, and sometimes even substitute parents. Yet low salaries, temporary contracts, and a general lack of support mean more and more professionals burn out rapidly.

Teaching is a vocation, but in Spain it looks more like an endurance test. While other countries treat teachers as pillars of society, here they are often seen as mere civil servants who are asked for a great deal and offered very little. What future can there be for a system that does not value those on the front line of educating the next generations?

The outlook is not very encouraging: the flight of talent into the private sector or to other countries with better working conditions is a growing trend. The number of candidates taking competitive examinations for permanent posts is falling, and teacher-training programs fail to attract the brightest young people. Ultimately, education faces a silent crisis in which the quality of its teaching workforce is at stake—not because there are no great teachers, but because there are fewer and fewer of them.
