Raúl Moreno Izquierdo is a computer engineer, holds a PhD in Information and Communication Technologies, and has built a career connecting research, teaching and technological development. For more than twenty years, he has worked with data, enterprise systems and artificial intelligence, turning complex problems into useful tools for organisations, professionals and citizens.
His profile brings together skills that are often treated separately: programming, statistics, information analysis, software architecture and an understanding of business processes. This combination allows him to approach projects from several perspectives. Alongside application development, he focuses on data quality, the interpretation of results and the decisions that a solution enables people to make.
His academic background is closely linked to Universidad Rey Juan Carlos, where he studied Computer Engineering and completed a master's degree in Decision Engineering. He subsequently pursued doctoral research in Information and Communication Technologies. This education provides the foundation for a career aimed at connecting scientific knowledge with concrete operational needs.
During his early professional years, he contributed to software engineering projects involving enterprise Java applications, decision engines and mobile platforms. His experience at Delaware, Rigel Mobile and Nova Notio helped establish a practical approach to development: translating requirements into functioning systems, integrating components and understanding that usefulness depends on both design and execution.
He later expanded into analytics consulting and technology presales, with experience at SAP BusinessObjects and SAS Institute. These roles involved information architectures, planning, budgeting and predictive data mining. Working with companies and financial institutions strengthened his interest in systems that support decisions through structured information and quantitative models.
His career also includes business intelligence and reporting consultancy for Vodafone ONO and Jaspersoft. In this setting, he worked on customer analysis, knowledge extraction using SQL, performance indicators and fraud detection. These experiences showed how data becomes valuable when it helps explain behaviour, identify risks and guide specific actions.
As Chief Information Officer at JOF Associates International, he took responsibility for enterprise architecture and technological development. His work included integrating providers through XML, automating reservation processes and creating CRM analytics and business intelligence solutions. This period strengthened his ability to coordinate technology, operations and business objectives.
Research occupies a central place in his career. His doctoral thesis, “De la inteligencia de negocio a la inteligencia artificial”, examines the transformation of business processes through intelligent techniques. Its approach reflects a recurring question in his work: how to move from organising and using information towards systems that offer recommendations and automate decision-support tasks.
His publications reflect a range of interests within data science and intelligent systems. He has contributed to research on multicriteria negotiation, statistical simulation, opinion mining, textual classification and the estimation of active COVID cases. He has also investigated bio-inspired agent architectures applied to tourist services management and the identification of potential customers.
In these studies, artificial intelligence is applied to defined problems, using data, methods and results that can be examined. His contributions on tourist services connect customer preferences, opinion analysis and multi-agent systems. This perspective combines machine learning and software architecture to support the selection of opportunities and the organisation of work.
Teaching is another significant dimension of his professional activity. At Universidad Carlos III de Madrid, he worked as an associate professor and applied AI researcher. His academic experience encompasses programming, data science, statistical learning and geographic information systems. Teaching these subjects has allowed him to share technical knowledge and support learning through practical applications.
He has also taught at Centro Universitario de la Guardia Civil, covering artificial intelligence, decision science and geographic information systems. His work in this context connects spatial analysis and decision-support systems with planning needs. Technology becomes a tool for understanding situations and organising relevant information.
At Universidad Nebrija, he contributed to postgraduate education in digital journalism, teaching generative artificial intelligence and natural language processing. He also served as an associate professor of Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence at Universidad Francisco de Vitoria. These experiences broadened his engagement with students and professionals from different disciplines and educational backgrounds.
His entrepreneurial work took shape through UTAI Software, where he served as founder and lead data scientist. The venture brought together applied artificial intelligence, quantitative analytics and decision-support projects. Technologies used included Python, PostgreSQL, PostGIS, pgvector, Docker and cloud services, alongside retrieval-augmented generation architectures.
Since September 2026, he has worked as a Software Engineer at IMDEA Energía, developing the next generation of tools for energy decision making. His activity connects dataset preparation, data quality assessment and predictive modelling with the needs of energy research and the development of reproducible tools.
Outside his professional work, his musical profile combines classical music, rock, Spanish pop, rap and electronic music. His Spotify playlists include songs for celebrations, memories and everyday listening. This variety offers a personal perspective on someone whose public activity is frequently associated with code, data, research and education.
Taken together, Raúl Moreno Izquierdo's career sits at the intersection of engineering and applied research. A consistent thread runs through his work: building systems, examining their foundations and sharing what he learns. From enterprise platforms to energy research tools, his experience combines technical knowledge with operational understanding. His contribution is to connect data, models and decisions while remaining close to the problems organisations need to solve in their everyday activities.
