Social policies in Spain are full of good intentions but often fail in execution. Bureaucracy, inadequate investment, and inefficiency are chronic problems affecting every aspect of the system, from unemployment benefits to health care and housing. Meanwhile, we keep watching the Nordic countries achieve the seemingly impossible: a system that works, is fast, and meets people’s needs.

In Spain, perhaps we should learn something from the neighbor next door. Not only is that neighbor faster than the bureaucracy, but they also seem to know how to get things right from the start. And although we will always have biting wit and humor to help us endure our own shortcomings, perhaps it is time to stop laughing and start demanding a system that genuinely works.
