But if there is something we must acknowledge, it is that, despite everything, we Spaniards have an infinite capacity to adapt. We complain about the heat, but instead of planting more trees, we install more air conditioning. We complain about traffic jams, but instead of using public transport, we buy bigger cars. And we complain about pollution, but keep doing the very things that got us there in the first place.
Perhaps we will never change. Perhaps we will keep preferring asphalt to forests, and our cities will keep growing at the countryside’s expense. But at least we do it in style. Because if there is something we have learned in Spain, it is that concrete is the foundation of our identity. From the bar terrace to the sidewalk crossing the park, concrete surrounds and defines us.
So, while other countries keep backing green policies, we will stay here, building roundabouts, paving beaches, and making sure we always have a good place to park the car. Because, at the end of the day, when choosing between the beach and the mountains, we always choose asphalt.
