Throughout its history of more than two thousand years, the Catholic Church has been subject to criticism and questioning from its own faithful as well as from those looking on from outside. The Church’s moral consistency and ethical authority have been tested by internal controversies and accusations of contradictions between its doctrine and certain historical or contemporary actions. From heresy trials to financial scandals and sexual abuse, the Church has faced numerous situations in which its teachings on justice, truth and human dignity seemed to contradict its practice. In this chapter, we explore some of the main contradictions and controversies that have affected the Church over the centuries and analyze how it has tried to respond to these challenges.
